School Summary
:
International curriculum.
254 students, 3-12 yrs.

The mission of Tokyo International School (TIS) is to nurture confident, open-minded, independently thinking, well-balanced inquirers for global responsibility.

The founding family opened Tokyo International School to provide an international child centered education for their own children. They opened the pre-school in 1994, the elementary school in 1997, and will open the middle school in August of 2003.

Tokyo International School is a co-educational non-denominational school with over 250 students from over 35 countries ranging from pre-school through elementary school located in central Tokyo. The pre-school has a maximum 6:1 student/teacher ratio and the elementary school has a maximum 15:1 student/teacher ratio.

At Tokyo International School students study through exploring six units of inquiry each school year. They will be asked what they currently know about each topic, what they would like to learn, and will discover the answers to their questions with the teacher as their facilitator.

The curriculum has been developed using curriculum models from the United States of America, England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Tokyo International School is a child- and family-centered school. Parental-involvement in the various facets of school life is considered a necessity and promotes a common bond which draws together the diverse backgrounds and talents represented in the school.
